I read in our local paper about a church in a small town near our home, that is converting an old building into a transitional center for domestic abuse victims. The thought occurred to me that it would be nice if these people who inhabited this center had a handmade quilt for their bed during their stay – a warm and comforting welcome for them during what is probably a traumatic, confusing time in their lives. Upon calling the organizer of the project, I learned that there are 14 bedrooms and that they are encouraging the people who stay at the center to take as much with them as they can when they leave and that would include the quilt on the bed! What a great idea. This would give the people who are struggling a bit of a “leg up” to try and begin their life again. On January 2nd of this year, I began to make the first of 14 quilts. This past Thursday, I handed over 18 quilts, 15 of them full sized and 3 of them being smaller, kid friendly quilts. It is a win-win for everyone and the best part is that I get to keep making quilts for this center as long as the demand is there.
